Universal Credit Housing Benefit Discrepancy

Written by: Daniel McMorrow (dmcmorrow@mage-net.net)

Background

The Legacy Benefit Process

In January/February each year, the landlord would send me a change of rent notice. It would inform me of the rent change and the effective date (generally the first Monday in April). I would submit this to Haringey Benefits, who would confirm the new amount had been accepted and adjust payments accordingly.

The Universal Credit Process

Under Universal Credit, the notice works differently. Even though I receive the change notice at the same time of year, I must wait until after the new rent takes effect in April to report it. Universal Credit then verifies the new rent on a central system and adjusts the entire award

Issue

On 26 January 2026, I received the standard Rent Change Notice. I was informed from 6 April 2026 my Rent would be £137.26 A £12.42 increase from last year.
